Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by a virus that spreads mainly through food or water contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. Almost everyone recovers fully, and a vaccine is available.
22 notifications since 1 January 2020 named hepatitis A virus, under 1% of all EU notifications in that time. 3 in the 365 days to 8 November 2026, against 3 in the 365 days before, no change. 9% were border rejections and 59% had a serious risk decision.
The origins named most often were Spain (4), Italy (3) and Morocco (3). The product categories named most often were fruit and vegetables (13), bivalve molluscs (6) and meat other than poultry (2). The products named most often were mussels (3), strawberries (3) and berries (2).
