Food contact materials are packaging, kitchenware, tableware and processing equipment. Article 3 of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 says they must not transfer their constituents to food in quantities that could endanger human health.
942 notifications since 1 January 2020 named migration from a food contact material, 3% of all EU notifications in that time. 116 in the 365 days to 8 November 2026, against 139 in the 365 days before, down 17%. 29% were border rejections and 33% had a serious risk decision.
The origins named most often were China (571), Türkiye (41) and Germany (32). The product categories named most often were food contact materials (885), fruit and vegetables (16) and soups, sauces and condiments (14). The products named most often were plates and bowls (226), kitchen utensils (196) and kitchenware (74).
