Since 2020 the origins named most often in EU food and feed notifications were Türkiye (3,203), Poland (2,344), India (2,240), China (2,097) and Netherlands (1,832). These are counts, not rates: big exporters and big EU producers collect more notifications simply because they ship more.

Why are EU countries on the list?
41% of notifications since 2020 named at least one EU member state as an origin. Products made inside the EU are notified after checks on the market, company checks or complaints, and an alert about a product made in one member state goes to the others. Those notifications are hardly ever border rejections, because the goods do not cross an outer border: 58 of them were.
Which origins outside the EU lead?
Outside the EU the origins named most often were Türkiye (3,203), India (2,240), China (2,097), the United States (1,269), Egypt (820), Brazil (811), the United Kingdom (787) and Ukraine (547). Together, 52% of their notifications were border rejections, the point where their goods are first checked.
What do the leading origins send?
- Türkiye: mostly fruit and vegetables, and the finding named most often was aflatoxins.
- Poland: mostly poultry meat, and the finding named most often was Salmonella.
- India: mostly nuts, nut products and seeds, and the finding named most often was ethylene oxide.
- China: mostly food contact materials, and the finding named most often was migration from a food contact material.
- the Netherlands: mostly food supplements and dietetic foods, and the finding named most often was Salmonella.
- France: mostly milk and milk products, and the finding named most often was Listeria monocytogenes.
- Germany: mostly food supplements and dietetic foods, and the finding named most often was Salmonella.
- Spain: mostly fish and fish products, and the finding named most often was mercury.
Each origin page breaks this down by product category, with a page of its own for every product from that origin with at least 15 notifications.
Why are counts not a safety ranking?
Nothing in RASFF is adjusted for volume. An origin that sends many more consignments of a product will be sampled more often and will collect more notifications even if its share of failures is lower. Border checks are also targeted: Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/1793 sets higher check rates for listed products from listed origins, so those are tested more and found more. Notifications also count a finding once for each origin named, so a product with two origins counts for both.
Which EU member states lead?
Among EU member states the origins named most often since 2020 were Poland (2,344), the Netherlands (1,832), France (1,754), Germany (1,419) and Spain (1,394). Their notifications are mostly alerts and information notifications: of all notifications naming an EU member state as origin, 48% were alerts.
Where can I see one country in detail?
Every origin with at least 20 notifications since 2020 has a page with counts by year, the share of border rejections, the risk decisions, the top findings and the latest 25 notifications: see the list of origins.
