Worked example
A worker on a last monthly wage of SAR 8,000 works from 1 July 2019 to 30 September 2026, both days counted: 7 years and 92 days, or 7.25 years. The full award is half a month for each of the first five years, 5 × SAR 4,000 = SAR 20,000.00, plus a full month for each year after, 2.2521 × SAR 8,000 = SAR 18,016.44: SAR 38,016.44 in all. The worker resigned with more than five but less than ten years, so Article 85 gives two thirds: SAR 25,344.29, about PKR 1,869,245 at the mid market rate on 8 November 2026.
The resignation shares
Resigning does not change the full award; it changes the share of it that is paid.
| Continuous service | Share |
|---|---|
| Less than 2 years | Nothing |
| 2 years to 5 years, both included | One third |
| More than 5 years, less than 10 | Two thirds |
| 10 years or more | The full award |
| Case | Full award | Paid |
|---|---|---|
| Resigned after 3 years | SAR 12,000.00 | SAR 4,000.00 |
| Resigned after 7 years | SAR 36,000.00 | SAR 24,000.00 |
| Contract ended by the employer after 7 years | SAR 36,000.00 | SAR 36,000.00 |
| Resigned after 12 years | SAR 76,000.00 | SAR 76,000.00 |
The law it follows
Articles 84 to 88 and the definitions in Article 2 were read on the ministry's consolidated text on 18 October 2026. The 2025 amendment (Royal Decree M/44, in force from February 2025) did not change any of them. The quotes are the ministry's English translation; its hyphens are written as spaces here, nothing else is changed, and the Arabic text is the one that binds.
Upon the termination of the employment relationship, the employer shall pay the worker an end of service indemnity calculated on the basis of half a month's wage for each year of the first five years of service, and one month's wage for each subsequent year. The last wage received shall be the basis for calculating the award. The worker shall be entitled to a pro rata award for fractions of a year worked. (Saudi Labor Law, HRSD English text)
If the employment relationship ends due to the worker's resignation, they shall be entitled in this case to one third of the end of service award after a continuous service period of not less than two years and not more than five years. They shall be entitled to two thirds of the award if their continuous service period exceeds five years but does not reach ten years. They shall be entitled to the full award if their continuous service period reaches ten years or more. (Saudi Labor Law, HRSD English text)
Notwithstanding the provisions of Article (85) of this Law, the full end of service award shall be payable in the event of the worker leaving work due to force majeure beyond their control. A female worker shall also be entitled to the full award if she terminates the contract within six months from the date of her marriage contract or within three months from the date of her delivery. (Saudi Labor Law, HRSD English text)
... within a maximum period of one week from the date of the termination of the contractual relationship. However, if the worker is the one who terminated the contract, the employer shall settle all their entitlements in full within a period not exceeding two weeks. The employer may deduct any debt owed to them by the worker due to the work from the amounts owed to the worker. (Saudi Labor Law, HRSD English text)
Wage: Means the actual wage. Month: Thirty days unless otherwise stipulated in the employment contract or the establishment's work regulations. (Saudi Labor Law, definitions)
All periods and dates stipulated in this Law shall be calculated according to the Hijri calendar, unless the employment contract or the work regulations stipulate otherwise. (Saudi Labor Law)
What this does not cover
- It counts years in the Gregorian calendar, as the ministry's unified contract does (clause 14.6). Article 10 says periods are counted in the Hijri calendar unless the contract or the work regulations say otherwise. A Hijri year is about eleven days shorter, so if your contract uses the Hijri calendar your service is a little longer than shown, and near the 2, 5 or 10 year lines that can change the share.
- It takes the last monthly wage you enter. The law bases the award on the actual wage (Article 2): the basic wage plus the other increases due under the contract. Whether a particular allowance counts can depend on your contract; this site does not decide it. Commissions may be left out by agreement (Article 86), and piece rate or commission pay is averaged under Article 96.
- It makes no deductions. Article 88 lets the employer deduct debts owed because of the work.
- It does not decide cases under Article 81, where a worker may leave without notice and keep all statutory rights, or any dispute over why the contract ended.
- The 2025 amendment defines resignation in terms of a fixed term contract. How Article 85 applies when a worker ends an open ended contract by notice under Article 75 is not settled in any official text this site could find.
- Continuous service: Article 2 counts statutory leave and up to twenty days of unpaid absence in a work year as continuous. The calculator does not take longer absences off.
- It does not cover domestic workers, who are outside the Labor Law (Article 7) and have their own regulation, or government employees.
