Yes. Shopify's head of engineering, Farhan Thawar, said on The Pragmatic Engineer podcast in July 2025 that Shopify does not ban AI in its remote, screen shared interviews and embraces it. He wants candidates to use AI for most of the work but still read the output and catch the line that is wrong.
- AI in interviews
- Allowed Encouraged
- Where
- Remote coding interviews. Directors and above also do a coding interview, run as pairing.
- What is graded
- Whether you can judge AI written code: spot what is wrong, and fix small things yourself.
- Basis
- Reported by the press
What else is known?
Thawar described a warning sign: a candidate who asks the AI to fix a trivial bug instead of changing one character by hand. He put the share of AI use he wants at about 90 to 95 percent, not all of it, and said candidates without a copilot tend to lose to candidates with one.
This comes from an interview with a Shopify leader, not from a written Shopify policy page; we found no such page.
