Ochratoxin A is a mould toxin produced by several Aspergillus and Penicillium species. It forms during storage and turns up in cereals, coffee, dried vine fruit, wine, spices and liquorice. The EU sets maximum levels for it in point 1.2 of Annex I to Regulation (EU) 2023/915.
805 notifications since 1 January 2020 named ochratoxin A, 2% of all EU notifications in that time. 302 in the 365 days to 8 November 2026, against 185 in the 365 days before, up 63%. 53% were border rejections and 77% had a serious risk decision.
The origins named most often were Türkiye (432), Uzbekistan (50) and India (33). The product categories named most often were fruit and vegetables (512), cereals and bakery products (103) and herbs and spices (71). The products named most often were figs (383), raisins (74) and pistachios (29).
